‘I pray for a unified Africa’ — Tyla speaks after backlash over silence on Xenophobic attacks

South African music star Tyla has called for a united Africa weeks after facing criticism from Nigerians over her perceived silence on xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa.

The singer made the call while speaking at the South African Music Awards over the weekend, where she expressed pride in her South African and African identity.

“I am just so happy to be South African. I’m happy to be African most of all,” Tyla said.

She added, “I pray one day to see a unified Africa. It’s so important.”

Her comments come weeks after several Nigerians, including celebrities, criticised her for allegedly failing to use her platform to speak out against xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

The backlash intensified after Nigerian celebrities and other campaigners called for a boycott of Tyla’s planned Lagos concert, accusing the singer of remaining silent on the issue.

Tyla subsequently cancelled the Lagos show, although she did not publicly link the cancellation to the controversy.

Her latest call for African unity has since sparked fresh reactions online, with some social media users viewing it as a response to the criticism she faced from Nigerians.
